Wofford Recap

27 Jan

Junior big man Trent Wiedeman (Suwanee, Ga.) came off the bench and scored a game-high 17 points and eight rebounds as College of Charleston got back to its winning ways on the road with a 79-50 rout of Wofford on Jan. 26 at Benjamin Johnson Arena.

The Cougars (14-7, 6-3 SoCon) avenged a regular-series sweep a year ago by the Terriers (8-13, 2-6), who had won the last three-straight meetings between the two schools extending to both team’s matchup in the Southern Conference Tournament championship game in 2011 in Chattanooga, Tenn.

CofC shot a season-best 59.2 percent (29-of49) from the field with 11 players contributing to its season-high scoring output (79) in league play. Defensively, the Cougars held Wofford to 33.3 percent shooting from the floor and only 5-of-16 from beyond the arc (31.3 percent).

Rookie combo forward/guard Theo Johnson (Sacramento, Calif.) had a blazing second half as he registered all of his career-high 12 points on three made three-pointers which added to the fire show the Cougars would put on the Terriers from downtown. Sophomore guard Anthony Stitt (Charlotte, N.C.) was the only other CofC player in double figures with 11.

Wofford’s starters were also held to single digits in scoring as reserve Jarell Byrd led the Terriers with 15 points. It marked the largest margin of victory (+29) series in the last three games between the two South Division rivals since a 25-point rout by CofC (79-54) in 2011.
