Taking Care Of Business

13 Dec

It’s finals week on the CofC campus and the Cougars have been taking care of business off-the-court and in the classroom over the last two weeks. I found junior Antwaine Wiggins working on a paper in the academic services computer lab prior to the team’s Monday practice in preparation for the Charleston Southern game on Dec. 15 at the North Charleston Coliseum.

Something that has always intrigued me is the back story of why you can always find associate head coach Mark Byington with a cup of java from Starbucks in his hand. I swear he should own stock in that place! He admits it’s his pick-me-up from being the father of a happy three-year-old son, Chase, who doesn’t get much sleep at night and working long hours watching film, etc. Well, if you want to be the best assistant in the Southern Conference, then a grande-sized regular coffee with sugar-free caramel should do the trick 🙂

After practice, I followed sophomores Willis Hall and Andrew Lawrence as they studied for finals at the Java City Café located in the Marlene and Nathan Addlestone Library. Hall worked on writing a paper for Philosophy 101, while Lawrence studied with a friend from Math 103 class.

I also ran into senior Garrett Campbell with his Math 295 study group. Campbell is a second-generation CofC student, as his mother, Beth, attended The College in the 70s. The former walk-on is a math and secondary education major and earned a full scholarship this past semester from Coach Cremins and his staff.

Those are the kind of feel-good stories that show the importance of The Cougar Club, the fundraising arm for CofC Athletics, which provides the opportunity for our student-athletes to achieve their academic and athletic goals through the generosity of Cougar Club members. More than 800 alumni, friends and fans of Cougar Athletics contribute to the Cougar Club annually.

For more information on how you can contribute or become a member of the Cougar Club, please contact executive director Brandon Stevens at 843-953-8255 or stevensbs@cofc.edu.
